Types of Band Saw
Your workplace will play a major role in your decision between a corded workshop band saw and a cordless handheld. The type of material being cut and the intended application will determine which band saw is ideal.
While a bigger corded workshop machine is better suited for carpentry, repeated cutting, and applications needing a firm work area, a cordless handheld device is perfect for portable site work. To learn more, check out our band saw buying guide.
Band Saw Features
Not every band saw model is made for the same materials or working environments, but there are a number of useful features worth considering when choosing the right machine.
Variable & Multiple Speed Settings
Many bandsaws have several or variable speed settings that allow you to alter the blade speed to fit the material you’re cutting. Harder or thicker materials may require a slower blade speed while softer materials can generally be cut efficiently at higher speeds. Blade speed control can help improve versatility and deliver cleaner, more controlled cuts in a variety of applications.
Accurate Straight & Curved Cutting
The band saw has a narrow continuous blade . This allows it to be used for straight cutting , but also for more detailed curved work . Workshop models are especially useful in woodworking where accurate curves, profiles and irregular shapes need to be cut without removing too much material.
LED Work Lights
Selected cordless handheld bandsaws feature integrated LED work lights for better visibility around the cut area. This is especially useful when working in poorly lit areas and assists the user with following the intended cutting line more accurately.
Adjustable Blade Guides & Cutting Supports
To enhance cutting precision and control, a band saw may have work supports, fences, or adjustable blade guides, depending on the type. When making straight or detailed cuts, properly adjusting these parts can help maintain the blade's stability and minimise undesired movement.

FAQs
What is a bandsaw used for?
A band saw is used to cut materials including wood, metal, and plastic in straight, curved, and irregular shapes. The machine, blade type, and cutting capability will determine the precise uses.
How can I make straight cuts with a band saw?
When using a band saw to achieve straight cuts, ensure sure the blade guides are adjusted appropriately and use a sharp blade that is properly tensioned. To maintain the workpiece aligned and pass the material through the blade at a steady, controlled rate without forcing the cut, utilise a fence or guide where one is available.
What is the difference between a cordless and corded bandsaw?
While a corded band saw provides continuous mains power and is frequently better suited for repetitive workplace cutting, a cordless device is more portable and handy for cutting materials immediately on site. Additionally, larger work tables and higher cutting capacity are typically available with larger corded band saws.
Can a bandsaw cut metal?
When equipped with the proper metal-cutting blade and run at the proper speed, a lot of bandsaws can indeed cut metal. Pipe, conduit, threaded rod, and metal pieces are frequently cut with portable bandsaws.
Can a bandsaw cut curves?
Yes. One of the main advantages of a band saw is its ability to cut curves and irregular shapes. A narrower blade generally allows tighter curves, while wider blades provide greater stability for straight cutting.
